Carol Propper, Professor of Economics of Public Policy at the University, has been awarded a CBE for her services to social science.

The accolade recognises Professor Propper’s research into public economics and economics of health care as well as her work with colleagues from other social science and medical disciplines.

Professor Propper holds a joint appointment with the Business School at Imperial College London. She has also been a Council Member of the Economics and Social Research Council and of the Royal Economic Society, as well as a former co-director of the Centre for Social Exclusion at the LSE.

Stephen Sparks FRS, Professor of Geology at the University, has been awarded a CBE for his services to environmental science.

The award recognises Professor Spark's research into volcanology and geological hazards, and his role in providing scientific advice to government on issues that include the eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano in Montserrat, radioactive waste disposal and the recent volcanic ash crisis.

Professor Sparks has been based at Bristol as the Canning Wills Professor of Geology since 1989. He has been President of the Geological Society of London and President of the International Association of Volcanology. He is currently Director of the Bristol Environmental Risk Research Centre (BRISK).

Professor Eric Thomas, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol, said: ‘Professors Propper and Sparks have achieved great distinction in their chosen fields and I’m delighted that they have received this recognition.’
