'The Idea of the University Revisited' will be held on Friday 30 April from 4:30pm to 6pm in Lecture Theatre 1, School of Chemistry, Cantocks Close, University of Bristol. The debate will be followed by a wine reception in the foyer.

'At a time of serious funding constraints, institutional reorganization and ultra-sensitivity to “external environments”, the very idea of the university is being intensively reconsidered,’ said Professor Gregor McLennan, Director of the IAS. ‘Under scrutiny and up for debate are questions concerning the basic purpose of university teaching, the future of free-thinking academics and intellectuals, and the overarching philosophical ethos under which we all operate – so it’s appropriate that we’re tackling these matters directly in this IAS debate at the University of Bristol.’

The main speakers are Simon Blackburn, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, and Alex Callinicos, Professor of European Studies (Social Theory) at Kings College, London. Their presentations will be followed by discussions from the floor, and conversations can continue after the session at a wine reception in the foyer of the Chemistry lecture theatres.
