Around 60 pupils from the Bridge Learning Campus, Hartcliffe, will be taking part in a sports day at the University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health tomorrow [Thursday 3 December].

The pupils, aged between ten and 11, will be teaming up with student volunteers and University staff to take part in a range of activities such as futsal (a Brazilian version of football), cheerleading, multi-sports games, relay races and a sports quiz.

The aim of the annual event is to encourage and motivate the pupils to participate in sport, to try new activities and work together.

The day will also serve as an opportunity for a group of the University’s students and staff to demonstrate their leadership skills as part of a nationally-recognised ‘Community Sports Leadership Award’. These skills will be put to further use as they complete additional volunteering hours with local school, sports, and community groups as a further part of the award.

Matt Edwards, Community Sport Development Officer, said: “The event provides a chance for the pupils to try new sports, work as a team and most importantly have fun. The day is also an excellent opportunity for our students and staff to get involved with a community project and experience the rewards of volunteering - both on the day itself, and in terms of developing their skills and experience for the future.”

The day has been funded by the University’s Alumni Foundation, the John Rutley Foundation and Sportsmatch. The event will run from 10 am to 3.30 pm on Thursday 3 December at the University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health, Tyndall Avenue, Clifton, Bristol.
