Max Brown 1950-2009

23 November 2009

Liz Lynch remembers Max Brown, a people-loving University porter who was 'one of the most optimistic people I ever knew'.

Max Brown joined Site Services in March 2005. His first job was as a late porter at the Student Union, where he soon became a firm favourite with the students. After 18 months of very late nights Max wanted a change, so he took up the role as a portering float. This role gave Max the opportunity to get to know all the University buildings by providing sickness and holiday cover throughout the precinct. Max took to this role like a duck to water as he had a very unique character; he loved people, so getting out and about meeting new people was never a chore.

Max was one of the most optimistic people I knew; his glass always seemed to be half full rather than half empty. Even after his cancer returned Max never gave up hope and wanted to continue working.

He was a keen follower of sport including horse-racing, cricket and football. He loved his music, and I am told his two favourites were the Sex Pistols and Bob Dylan, so his taste in music, like his collection of hats, could never be described as boring.

Max retired on ill health grounds at the end of September 2009 after a long battle with cancer and passed away on Wednesday 18 November.

Max was an asset to our team and the University and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Our condolences have been passed onto his wife Lyn and his two children for their sad loss.
