Around 100 of the city’s older residents will be gathering tonight [23 April] to attend a special dinner-dance event hosted by the University of Bristol’s Student Community Action (SCA) group, the University’s student volunteering organisation.

With the help of 50 student volunteers, guests will be treated to a sherry reception, a three-course meal, followed by a magic act, dancing, a live jazz band and prize raffle. The student volunteers will also act as door-to-door escorts, providing transport for guests who can’t get to the Union themselves.

The dinner dance is an annual event and forms part of 36 community projects the SCA group run in order to help build positive relationships between the student body and the local community.

Jen Roberts, SCA Co-ordinator, said: “The SCA annual dinner dance is a fantastic event and always great fun. It’s also a great opportunity for our students to chat to some of Bristol’s older residents and give something back to the community.

“In addition to the event, the SCA run a day centre for Bristol’s older residents in the Students’ Union from 11.30 am to 3 pm every Wednesday during term time. If anyone is interested or knows someone who would benefit from the Wednesday social club, get in contact with the SCA office, tel. 0117 954 5888.”

The event has been part-funded by the University’s Alumni foundation and the SCA group.
