Peter Mathieson, Professor of Renal Medicine and Head of the Department of Clinical Science at North Bristol, has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Professor Mathieson went to school in Cornwall and graduated in Medicine with Honours from the University of London in 1983. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Cambridge in 1992. His research interests are in normal kidney function and the mechanisms of kidney disease.

His teaching commitments include regular participation in the Bristol link with Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda.

He is married to Tina, an orthodontist. They live in the splendidly named rural enclave of Waterley Bottom in Gloucestershire and have two grown-up children.

Professor Mathieson said: 'I am thrilled and honoured to be selected as the next Dean and I am determined to repay the confidence that has been shown in me.'

Professor Eric Thomas, Vice-Chancellor, said: 'Peter has a very distinguished track record both as an academic and as a leader. I have no doubt that he will succeed in building on the faculty’s strengths.'
