Senior citizens from day centres all over the city will be putting on their dancing shoes this week [Thursday 24 April] for an oriental-themed dinner dance hosted by Bristol University’s Student Community Action ( SCA) group.

SCA, the University’s student volunteering organisation, are hosting the annual event with the help of around 50 student volunteers. The evening will start with a sherry reception followed by a three-course meal. Participants will then be treated to a performance by the Chinese dragon lion dance troupe, Le Roc dancing and a live jazz band followed by a gala prize raffle.

Over 100 guests are attending the event, paying £6 a ticket with SCA covering additional expenses. The student volunteers will also act as door-to-door escorts, providing transport for those people who can’t get to the Union themselves.

Laura Petford, SCA Co-ordinator, said: “The dinner dance is a fantastic annual event that SCA hosts. It is always great fun and a great chance for our students to chat to some of Bristol’s older residents and give something back to the community.

“SCA run a day centre for Bristol’s senior citizens in the Students’ Union from 11.30 am to 3 pm every Wednesday during term-time. If anyone is interested or knows someone who would benefit from the Wednesday social club, get in contact with the SCA office on 0117 954 5888.”

SCA aims to build positive relationships between the student body and the local community as well as meeting a social need. It runs 36 community projects and holds regular events during term time.
