RAG raises record amount for local charities

More than 100 people took part in the University’s annual RAG (raising and giving) procession last weekend, raising over £1,300 for local Bristol charities.

The 83rd procession featured student floats, an open-top bus, medieval soldiers and morris dancers. The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Royston Griffey, opened the procession at midday on the Downs and for the next three hours participants wound their way through the city centre, with street collectors raising a record amount in donations.

George Cave, RAG procession co-ordinator, said: ‘The procession has been a fantastic success, and our record-breaking total reflects the hard work that RAG has put in this year to raise money for local charities in the Bristol area. We have now raised over £100,000 in just five months and are pushing the boundaries of fundraising, smashing previous records and rewriting history. The RAG procession is indebted to the enormous number of volunteers and local businesses who gave up their time and services to help make the procession what it was.’

RAG Week continues until 2 March, with more than 25 different events organised by student groups in collaboration with local organisations.
