Around 90 local school pupils from Withywood Community School will be visiting the University of Bristol this week to experience university life.

Two groups of Year 9 and 10 pupils will be attending between 12 and 3 pm today [Wednesday 28] and tomorrow [Thursday 29] to take part in the event, aimed at providing the pupils with a chance to discover more about studying at university.

Accompanied by the University’s trained student ambassadors the pupils will begin the visit with a guided tour of the University to help familiarise them with the campus. After the tour the pupils will be split into groups and asked to go and investigate various aspects of university life such as finding out about university sport, the university union and how to apply to university. Each group will then be asked to present their findings in a presentation to the other groups.

Doug Jennings, Outreach and Summer Schools Officer, Widening Participation and Undergraduate Recruitment Office, said: “We are delighted to have pupils from Withywood Community School visit the University. The visit is intended for pupils to gain an insight into life at university and for them to be able to see what opportunities are available to them, we also hope that the encounter inspires them to study at university.”

The visit is organised in collaboration with Aimhigher, the programme run by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) with support from the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills (DIUS). Aimhigher aims to widen participation in higher education (HE) by raising the awareness, aspirations and attainment of young people from under-represented groups.
