A University spinout company specialising in state-of-the-art wearable computing technology has won the top prize in an investment competition. The ‘Peoples’ Investment’ competition formed part of the annual SETsquared Garden Party, showcasing the region’s new businesses to prospective investors.

The event, hosted by Bristol University at Goldney Hall Orangery and Gardens, provided an opportunity for ten of the region’s high-tech companies to promote and network with potential investors.

Phillip Tellwright, event host and Network Director of SWAIN (the South West Angel and Investor Network), introduced the ‘Peoples’ Investment’ competition by asking the audience to vote for the best investment proposition from the presenting companies, using the four £25,000 ‘South West Dollar bills’ they had each been given on arrival.

Bristol University spinout company Pure Ability Ltd won the most ‘investment’ votes and secured the top prize of £250.  Pure Ability brings state-of-the-art wearable computing technology to the healthcare industry.  They develop products with intuitive, accessible interfaces both for people with restricted movement and for the able-bodied.

During the event, ten selected companies entered a two-minute ‘Elevator Pitch’ competition to promote their businesses as an investment proposition.  Judged by representatives of the event sponsors, the HSBC Elevator Pitch trophy for best presentation was awarded to Ryan Notz of The Buildersite.  Buildersite.co.uk is an e-marketplace for home improvement, providing an online meeting place for homeowners, contractors and tradesmen.

Phillip Tellwright, said: “The annual SETsquared Garden Party is an opportunity for local early-stage companies to showcase to prospective investors and network with mentors and other businesses at a similar development stage.”

The event, sponsored by SWAIN, HSBC and Ernst & Young was held on Wednesday 20 June.
