Organised by the University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health, the campaign will be launched with the NHS Smoking Cessation Roadshow, which is visiting the Centre tomorrow between 11 am to 2.30 pm. The Roadshow is offering free support and advice for those wanting more information and advice on how to stop smoking.
The event will also offer staff and students the option of taking part in a six-week ‘support to stop’ programme starting from Monday 4 June. The programme will provide one-to-one sessions offering help to smokers as they break the habit by addressing barriers to behaviour change and devising skills to deal with cravings.
Professor Eric Thomas, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: “A lot of smokers would like to give up, but need a bit of support and encouragement to do so. This initiative will help them take the plunge and reap all the health and financial benefits that follow.”
The new smoke-free law will help improve health in many ways. There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals in the form of particles and gases - some of these chemicals are dangerous poisons.
The free event is open to all University of Bristol staff and students and will be taking place tomorrow, Thursday 24 May, at the University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health, Tyndall Avenue, Clifton, Bristol.
