The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Thomas, hosted a reception last week for all international scholarship holders at the University.

In previous years, there has been a reception for Chevening Scholarship holders, but this year the event was extended to all recipients of international scholarships administered centrally by the University.

The reception, organised by the International Office, was held at Goldney Hall. Around 100 people attended, including Pro Vice-Chancellor Avril Waterman-Pearson, the Registrar, Derek Pretty, faculty deans and research directors. Representatives from the British Council also travelled to Bristol for the event.

Professor Thomas greeted the guests and acknowledged the input of international students to university life and research. Goldney’s beautiful Orangery, gardens and famous grotto provided the ideal backdrop to the evening, and there was musical entertainment from a string quartet.

For the academic year 2006/07, scholarships were awarded to students from the following 35 countries: Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Byelorussia, Canada, China, Cyprus, Egypt, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Libya, Malaysia, Mauritus, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.
