Bristol students took the individual men’s and women’s titles at the recent 2007 British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Windsurfing Championships.

Medical student Hugh Sims-Williams won the men’s championship and last year’s women’s champion, engineering student Tanya Saleh, narrowly won the women’s event.

A record 13 teams entered the competition for the overall university title. The big battle was between Bristol and Southampton, but although Bristol started well, winning the first race, Southampton took the next two races and the overall championship. Bristol came second and Cambridge third.

Hugh Sims Williams is the youngest windsurfer in one of the UK’s most successful Olympic teams, Skandia Team GBR. He is also a Youth National Champion. A member of the University’s Advanced Sports Squad, he hopes to compete in the 2012 Olympics in Weymouth.
