Local primary pupils can now dine in style thanks to Bristol University

Press release issued: 21 March 2007

Pupils from Greenfield Primary School, Knowle West, are now able to dine in style, thanks to a generous donation from Bristol University for the redecoration of their dining hall.

Pupils from Greenfield Primary School, Knowle West, are now able to dine in style, thanks to a generous donation from Bristol University for the redecoration of their dining hall.

The dining hall, which caters for the school’s 335 pupils during lunch, hadn't been decorated in 25 years and was in desperate need of a transformation.

University of Bristol Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Thomas, pledged to donate the funds for the hall’s redecoration after taking part in a staff community challenge at the school last year to help rejuvenate its playground.

A team from the University’s Building Services Department carried out the redecoration work along with repainting the entire hall during half-term.

The school has recently joined the Bristol Healthy Schools Programme, a new initiative to help the school promote healthier eating.  It is hoped the dining hall’s new look will help the school reach its goals towards promoting healthier eating by improving the atmosphere during lunch times for both pupils and staff.

Julia Skinner, Headteacher, Greenfield Primary School, said: “Although the school has recently been amalgamated and there was some building and redecoration work, it was not possible to do anything to the dining hall. This generous gift from Bristol University will complete our new school. We hope that this will continue our partnership with the University and that it will not only include decorating but working with students to support the children in raising their achievement.”

A plaque to mark the University’s donation was mounted in the school’s dining hall on Friday, 16 March. The project was funded by the University of Bristol and organised by the University’s Centre for Public Engagement.
