Miles Gregory, a fourth-year PhD student in the Department of Drama and Director of the Bristol Shakespeare Festival, is to oversee an exciting programme of open-air theatre this summer, which includes a production by London’s Globe Theatre.
Four hundred years after the Globe Theatre first toured to Bristol, it returns to perform Romeo and Juliet in Queen Square during the first week of July. Other productions include an all-male version of the same play by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which opens the festival in late May before beginning a nationwide tour. A total of eight productions will take place at venues around the city.
The festival, founded in 2003, now attracts audiences of around 8,000 each year. ‘Things have really taken off this year’, says Gregory. ‘Bristol now hosts the largest professional open air Shakespeare festival in the UK. This is a great opportunity for us to see top quality shows in our beautiful city.’
