Bristol is set to host the Olympic team from one of the leading athletic nations, Kenya, in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Sporting legend and Chairman of the Kenya Olympic Committee, Dr Kip Keino has chosen Bristol as Kenya’s base for its Pre-Games Training Camp in 2012.
Dr Keino accompanied by Tom O’Omuombo, Director General of the Kenya Olympic Committee will visit the city this Friday [2 February] to sign a collaboration agreement between Bristol and Kenya.
Dr Keino and the Lord Mayor, Peter Abraham will sign the joint agreement at 5 pm this Friday at the Lord Mayor’s Office, Mansion House, Clifton Down, Bristol. The visit will culminate in a dinner hosted by Bristol University at Royal Fort House.
The agreement, supported by the city's professional and amateur sporting bodies, Business West, Destination Bristol, Bristol City Council and the education sector, is the basis of Bristol’s partnership with Kenya. This multi-faceted partnership embraces a wide range of educational, business, cultural and sporting links that will benefit all involved.
Bob Reeves, Director of Sport, Exercise and Health at Bristol University, who facilitated the partnership said: “In due course, we might even find a Bristol athlete to train with the Kenyans and bring home a medal for Britain. Wouldn't that be something? I am sure that everyone in Bristol will be thrilled at this development, and I hope that we can all give Kip and Tom a really warm welcome.”
