A new Road Show to help raise awareness of healthy eating will tour several primary and nursery schools tomorrow, Wednesday, 7 June.  Ten MSc students from the University of Bristol’s Exercise and Health Sciences Department are taking part in the event, helping to promote healthy smiles in the local community.

The Healthy Eating Road Show runs in conjunction with National Smile Month, and is aimed at both parents and children. It is organised by multi-agency organisation, Lawrence Weston Food Networks.

The students, who are all studying the MSc in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Public Health at the University of Bristol, will be using their knowledge of health promotion to help educate and demonstrate to both parents and children the benefits of a healthy diet. The Road Show will present a variety of health promotion activities, including fruit and vegetable tasting, diet information, healthy snacks and drinks testing experiments at every school. Children from each primary school have also been invited to take part in a poster competition to illustrate ideas for healthy snacks.

National Smile Month is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, this year's campaign is using the theme 'Feed Your Smile'. The campaign is looking at the importance of a healthy diet for your teeth, including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

Cutting down on the frequency of sugary foods and drinks is a key message of the National Smile Campaign. Vegetables, fruit, cheese and sugar free drinks are all safe snacking options. People should brush twice-a-day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and visit the dentist regularly, as often as is recommended, as part of a good oral health routine.
