Sponsor a pilgrimage in the Pyrenees

3 September 2006

Dr Mary Wright is doing a 50-mile sponsored walk to sponsor children with disabilities or emotional needs on an Easter pilgrimage holiday to Lourdes.

She hopes to raise £1,000 to sponsor children with disabilities or social or emotional needs on an Easter pilgrimage holiday to Lourdes with HCPT, The Pilgrimage Trust. Dr Wright has travelled as a helper with HCPT for eight years.

HCPT was formed in 1956 when a young doctor, Michael Strode, took four children with disabilities to Lourdes. He insisted that the children should be treated just like other pilgrims and should be accommodated in hotels rather than hospitals. Each year during Easter week, HCPT takes 2,000 children from all walks of life, regardless of religion or belief. They are chosen on the basis of their medical and social needs, and HCPT raises funds for the sponsorship of all the children. Helpers pay their own costs.
