Bristol University has helped the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society (BMCS) to raise over £10,000 in response to an earthquake appeal launched last month to help the Kashmir earthquake victims. Three million people are homeless and 80,000 people have died following the earthquake in Kashmir, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

The money was raised through ticket sales and a prize auction at a charity dinner organised by the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society, held in the Council House. Prizes included a photo shoot, a hot air balloon flight and a free sports camp for children, all donated by the University.

The money will be sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which is co-ordinating aid from 13 British charities, including Oxfam and Save the Children.

Ninety pounds will buy a winterised tent, while £42 buys a family survival kit that lasts for 20 days, and £15 buys seven blankets.

Farooq Siddique of the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society said: “It was really encouraging to see the University involved. The auction items donated by the University proved very popular and raised a lot of money. We really appreciate their support.”
