Their challenge is to get as far away from Bristol as possible in 36 hours without spending any money on transport or getting their friends to drive them.  Essentially they hitchhike. All the money raised goes to the University of Bristol RAG Fund, which this year alone has already raised £25,000.

Each team has one aim, to beat the current record holders who got to Phoenix, Arizona last year. A task which is far from impossible, as past teams have made it as far as Washington DC, Tenerife and Bahrain.

Most students make it to mainland Europe or to the north of Britain. For example, students have made it to Prague, Tenerife and Venice.  The least distance ever travelled by a jailbreaker is Reading, where they were stuck for a number of days!

The jailbreak students won't be able to fool the judges.  To prove where the students have been they have to take a picture outside a famous landmark holding a local newspaper, and post a postcard back from the country before they leave.

All the money raised, which runs into thousands, goes to local charities via the Greater Bristol Foundation or to national charities.

Zoe Thomas, RAG Officer, said: "RAG is a charity fundraising organisation run entirely by students.

"It always astounds RAG just how much initiative our members have and it always amazes us how far most jailbreakers travel using only the art of blagging.

"It is a great chance for students to really challenge themselves whilst raising thousands of pounds for many fantastic local causes."

Jailbreak takes place on Saturday, November 20 at 9 am at the Students’ Union, Queen’s Road, Bristol.
