School to have a sporting day out

Press release issued: 24 August 2004

Up to 200 Year 7 pupils from Fairfield School, Montpelier, will join Bristol University students and staff for an all-action programme of sporting fun.

Up to 200 Year 7 pupils from Fairfield School, Montpelier, will join Bristol University students and staff for an all-action programme of sporting fun at the University’s Sports Centre and Coombe Dingle complex on Tuesday, August 24.

The day will offer pupils the opportunity to try a variety of different sports they may have not tried before, such as trampolining, korfball, orienteering, hockey, rounders, netball and softball with guidance from University staff and students.

The day serves as an excellent way of introducing pupils to each other and to school staff.  It also enables University staff and students to put into practice the coaching skills they have developed through completing the University’s Community Sports Volunteer Scheme (CSVS).

Simon Hinks, Deputy Director of Sport said: ‘We are looking forward to Fairfield's visit as it further enhances the role played by the Centre for Sport, Exercise & Health as being 'inclusive' rather than 'exclusive' in the provision of sporting opportunities for the wider community.  We pride ourselves on the fact that we now offer a wide range of facilities and services, which are fully open to the public, ranging from exercise to music classes to an excellent healthy living and sports medicine workshop.  More than ten schools currently use our sports facilities on a regular basis so it is good to be able to add Fairfield to the programme for the first time.’
