A big box outside Bristol University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health
is hiding a sculpture, which will be unveiled on Thursday, August 19. 
Ex-England and Gloucestershire cricketer and artist, Jack Russell, will unveil the sculpture.

The sculpture, called ‘Flat out’, is designed by local artist, Jon Buck. 
It is cast in bronze and is of a running figure standing approximately two metres high and wide and balanced on a single foot.  The anatomy is slightly flattened and fluid in nature to give a sense of movement.  The surface texture is made up of a series of engraved designs signifying various areas of academic life.

Bob Reeves, Director of Sport, Exercise and Health at the University, said: “The Centre is a people building.  It is the healthy heart of the University.  It has a pulse.  The sculpture reflects the dynamism of the place, its users and the University as a whole."

“The sculpture reinforces the Centre’s aims: to promote the understanding and active participation in sport, and therefore produce good health and personal well-being.”

Jon Buck, added: “I chose to create a running figure as it not only invokes the dynamism of human movement but also incorporates all three elements of the Centre’s title – Sport, Exercise and Health.

“The signs and symbols the figure carries as it runs between Senate House and the Centre represent the academic, fiscal and administrative areas of university life, so the figure not only physically runs between the two centres making a connection between them, but also represents the individual’s need to attend to both elements – body and mind – in his or her own life.”
