On Monday, March 15, the University of Bristol played host to an event to help small businesses to face the challenge to source appropriate finance.

Titled 'Access to Finance', the event was a roaring success with over 60 attendees from business, industry and new enterprises from across the South West.  Two industry-leading speakers gave an overview of the market and shared their strategies for success.  Jonathan Jenkins, Joint Managing Director of OFEX talked the audience through funding new businesses through the flotation route, while Stuart Ager, Head of Technology Sector Group for the Royal Bank of Scotland Group explained the role of the bank in financing your business.

The event focused on explanations of what finance is available and tips on how to get it, as well as warnings of the common pitfalls and mistakes businesses make. Feedback after the event was extremely positive, with attendees rating it 'a must' for high-tech entrepreneurs.  Not surprising since sourcing finance is one of the biggest challenges facing growing businesses.

Peter Maxwell, Business Incubation Manager at the University of Bristol, who provide a range of support to new businesses in the South West, enthused: "This event was invaluable given its emphasis on practical support and advice.  It certainly helped a number of entrepreneurs to give their business idea an investment readiness road-check!"
