New patron for Bristol Neuroscience

Press release issued: 25 February 2004

Lord Sainsbury has become the new patron of Bristol Neuroscience, a University of Bristol initiative to promote both research and clinical practice in the field of neuroscience.

Lord Sainsbury has become the new patron of Bristol Neuroscience (BN), a University of Bristol initiative to promote both research and clinical practice in the field of neuroscience.

Lord Sainsbury has a personal interest in neuroscience, having studied psychology as a student at Cambridge.  He is currently Minister for Science and Innovation, a role that combines his love of science with his business acumen and experience in the world of politics.  He also has personal links with the University of Bristol: at Cambridge he studied under Richard Gregory, now Emeritus Professor in the University's Department of Experimental Psychology.

Meeting the BN steering group, Lord Sainsbury said: “Neuroscience is at a very exciting time, and forming subject-based 'clusters' of scientists to carry out research in complementary disciplines, such as with Bristol Neuroscience, is the way to take science forward.”

A spokesman for Bristol Neuroscience said: “We are delighted to welcome Lord Sainsbury as our patron.  His support for neuroscience research will be immensely valuable in helping develop BN, and we look forward to inviting him to Bristol in the near future.”
