UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
Museum Status for Bristol's Theatre Collection
The second largest theatre collection in the country, housed in Britain's first Department of Drama at the University of Bristol, has been awarded Fully Registered Museum status.
The award, issued by Re:source, the Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries, recognises that the Theatre Collection has achieved approved standards in museum management, collection care and public services; that it is a suitable home for collections which are part of our common heritage; and that it is worthy to receive support from public sources.
The Theatre Collection, established in 1951, is an internationally renowned research centre and attracts visitors from all over the world. Its collections are particularly strong in theatre in the South West, Victorian and post-World War II theatre history, women's theatre and scenery and costume design.
Jo Elsworth, Keeper of the Theatre Collection, said: 'We are delighted to have received Museum Status. The Collection is a wonderful and varied resource that tells a rich and exciting story.
'It's a fantastic resource that is of benefit to schools and other educational establishments as well as the general public.'
