A Professor of Food Safety at Bristol University has been honoured with the Colworth Prize Lecture by the Society for General Microbiology (SGM) for his outstanding contribution to food microbiology.

Professor Tom Humphrey's research interests cover the whole food chain. His current work includes the control of bacteria such as Salmonella in food animals and product contamination and cross-contamination during food processing and preparation.

The Colworth Prize Lecture is awarded every two years. The winner receives a prize of £1,000 and is asked to give a lecture based on their work. Professor Humphrey's lecture will take place on April 9 at the SGM Annual Meeting at the University of Edinburgh.

Professor Avril Waterman-Pearson, Head of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, said: "As well as being a great personal distinction for Professor Humphrey, this is a further reflection of the University's excellence in research."
