Tragic loss


The University is deeply sorry to announce the death of John Farndon, Professor of Surgery in the School of Medicine. He collapsed and died at a meeting at the University on the evening of Wednesday 6 February. He was 55.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Thomas, who studied under Professor Farndon at the University of Newcastle in the '70s, said: 'John was a widely respected and much-liked man. His death has come as a profound shock to colleagues in the University and the wider world. We feel a keen sense of loss and offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends.'

Professor Farndon came to Bristol from the University of Newcastle in 1988 and was based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. His research interests included quality of life issues in health care, growth factors in breast cancer and secretory mechanisms in parathyroid glands.
