Our earth: origins and endings

Next week sees the second of four free lunchtime public lectures at which scientists outline their current understanding of the earth from its beginning.

The illustrated talks, organised by Bristol University's Public Programmes Office, take place in the Waddelow Hall, Broadmead Baptist Church, Union Street (entrance between Carwardine and Tesco) on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 pm.

At the first talk [February 12], Professor Bernard Wood, Fellow of the Royal Society, explored Origins - earth, the universe and everything.

Professor Steve Sparks, adviser to the British Government on the Montserrat volcano, will talk about Supervolcanoes and impacts - understanding crises on February 19.

On February 26, Dr Paul Pearson will introduce When Britain baked, explaining the greenhouse effect past, present and future.

Finally, on March 12, Professor Mike Benton, one of the scientific experts behind the BBC series 'Walking with Dinosaurs' and 'Walking with Beasts', will look at fossils, biodiversity and extinction in Voices from the past.

The speakers are all members of the University's Department of Earth Sciences. No pre-booking is necessary and members of the audience are welcome to bring their sandwiches.
