Physicist wins international research grant

A physicist at Bristol University has been awarded a major grant by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).

David Cherns, Professor of Physics, is one of a four-strong international research team to be awarded the research grant.

Together with his fellow researchers in Japan and America, Professor Cherns will be studying super-wide band-gap nitride semiconductors for UV lasers. The research could have important applications in a range of fields, from optical storage to lithography and from high-tech lighting to wireless communication systems.

Professor John Steeds, Head of the Physics Department, said: 'NEDO grants are very prestigious and are only awarded to international research teams operating at the highest level.'
