Centre for Medical Education opens

The University of Bristol's new Centre for Medical Education will be formally opened by Professor Baroness Ilora Finlay of Llandaff tomorrow [Thursday, July 11] at 2 pm.

The opening of the Centre will bring together under one roof the offices of the Director of Medical Education and the Medical Clinical Dean. It will also be the home of the Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals masters, diploma and certificate programme and will host the development of an online learning environment for medicine.

Staff at the Centre are currently working on the strategy for the delivery of the medicine and surgery degree curriculum in light of the further 80 medical student places allocated to the University by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Department of Health Joint Implementation Group. This increase will take place from October 2002.

Dr David Mumford, Director of Medical Education, said: "The Centre will become the focus for everyone who shares the leadership of the medicine and surgery degree programmes and for colleagues in the new network of clinical academies in NHS Trusts in and around Bristol.

"It will foster good educational practice throughout the University's Faculty of Medicine and stimulate high quality educational research and evaluation."
