Science and the quality of life

Seven scientists from Bristol University are to speak at Europe's biggest festival of science. Held this year at the University of Leicester from 9-13 September, thousands of visitors will come to hear more than 400 scientists speaking and debating. The theme for the prestigious BA Festival of Science is 'Science and the Quality of Life'.

The wide range of issues covered by the Bristol speakers illustrate just how relevant science is to our every day lives. Their topics cover such diverse subjects as how we learn and remember things, why the chicken crossed the road, what will happen if the oceans die, predicting extreme weather, improving the quality of life for people with diabetes, how pigs manage their anger, and improving education in science. Other tough questions to be addressed at the conference will be the health of our aging population and the potential dangers of antibiotic resistance.

As well as hearing about groundbreaking work from all areas of science, the Festival is a chance for delegates to express their own views. The major platform for this will be the nightly 'x-change' where festival-goers can get together in an informal atmosphere to discuss hot topics of the day.
