University beats Bristols traffic

Friday, June 14 is national liftshare day. The University of Bristol, through its Institute of Learning and Research Technology (ILRT) team have developed a powerful software system called 234car to help University staff cut their own travel costs and reduce demands on parking.

Getting 2, 3 or 4 people into one commuter car helps reduce the number of cars on the road, helps reduce congestion and pollution and helps the University achieve the aims of its Transport Plan.

234car not only matches people who live in the same area, but matches people who live along the route, increasing the chances of finding people who want to car share. The software has been very successful and has helped to see a fall of 27% in single person car journeys to and from the University.

The software has recently been introduced at the new Temple Quay site and many other organisations within Bristol are looking at using the 234car software.

Martin Wiles, University of Bristol Energy and Environmental Manager, said: "Car sharing has proved very popular - we have designated parking spaces especially for car sharers and many of them have found it less stressful and more enjoyable travelling to work with a colleague. And of course it helps us reduce the University's environmental impact".
