Bristol Enterprise Centre Business Plan Competition - Prize Winner
Dr Alan Chalmers, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Bristol University and Duncan Brown, Southampton City Heritage Services, have won Bristol University's first Bristol Enterprise Centre (BEC) Business Plan Competition. The prize fund of £25,000, sponsored by an internationally renowned group that includes Citigate Dewe Rogerson, Deloitte & Touche, Fortis Bank, Osborne Clarke OWA and STMicroelectronics, will help the winning team to bring their idea to market.
Sir John Kingman, Vice-Chancellor of the University, made the announcement at a Gala Dinner hosted by the Bristol Enterprise Centre at the Victoria Rooms on Monday 2 July.
The winning project, ArchLight: High fidelity media content creation, will enable the past to come to life through realistic computer models.
ArchLight grew out of on-going research into computer modelling of light and colour as a means of investigating heritage sites. The techniques developed allow for accurate computer models showing how our ancestors lived and worked. Computer games companies will also have the opportunity through this technology to make their graphics even more life-like. There is already a market for the product from the media, museums, the archaeological community and games software companies.
Dr Neil Bradshaw, Director of the Bristol Enterprise Centre, said: 'Congratulations to all the finalists on the originality of their business ideas. This is an exciting time for the University and its community. We hope ArchLight's success will encourage many other enterprising students and staff to enter the Business Plan Competition in the future.'
The Business Plan Competition is part of the University's aim to develop a culture of entrepreneurship and enterprise and to build on the University's outstanding track record in forging links with industry and generating entrepreneurs.
