Vice-Chancellor to open new Medical Sciences Teaching Laboratories

Sir John Kingman, Vice-Chancellor of Bristol University, will officially open new Medical Sciences Teaching Laboratories at the University today, Wednesday 15 November, at 4 pm.

The new building, situated within the East Wing of Chemistry, includes large teaching laboratories for first- and second-year students studying biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology and histology. The laboratories hold up to 550 students at one time, an increase of 50 per cent over the old laboratories. As many as 25 per cent of all University students will use the laboratories during their time at Bristol.

The laboratories will enable the students to carry out a much wider range of modern experimental techniques, including the use of radio-isotopes. The refurbished building also contains a computing room set up with new computers.

Professor Stephen Lisney, Dean of Medicine, commenting on the new building, said: 'The new facilities will build on Bristol's reputation of high quality teaching in a research environment. By establishing these new Medical Sciences Teaching Laboratories we will continue to attract the highest calibre of students and staff to Bristol. The wide range of personal skills and practical expertise acquired by these young students will enable them to be well-equipped to deal with medical and scientific issues in the 21st century.'
