Thousands of sixth-formers to get a taste of University life

Over 10,000 students from all over the country are expected at Bristol University tomorrow [Wednesday, May 9] for the University's Preview Day.

Bristol's Preview Day gives sixth-formers and others intending to apply to university a taste of what university life is like. It is reckoned to be the biggest and best such open day in the country. Bristol continues to be very popular with applicants, even in subjects such as Science and Engineering which have been declining in popularity elsewhere. This year it is probably the most popular university in the UK in terms of numbers of applicants per place.

All the University's departments will be open to visitors from 9.45 am to 3.30 pm, and are mounting exhibitions about the programmes and teaching methods in their particular subjects. Many departments are putting on lectures, on subjects as diverse as The Equine Athlete, Watching Insulin Work, Glaciers and Global Climate, Spacecraft Engineering and Human Rights in the New Millennium. Others will be showing some of the research projects that students undertake. Both staff and students will be available to answer questions.

Student stewards, wearing yellow T-shirts, will be on hand to help visitors find their way around the University precinct. Staff from the Access Unit for Deaf and Disabled Students will be available to offer advice and information to prospective deaf and disabled students. There will also be a display on the work of the major student services available at the University in the Hawthorns Refectory. It will include details on Student Finance, together with information on the Job Shop, the Ecumenical Chaplaincy Centre, Nightline, the Student Counselling Service, the Students' Health Service and the Students' Union Advice Centre.
