UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
Bristol historian hits the top spot

A newly published book by Bristol University historian Catherine Merridale has been hailed as a book of the year by three national newspapers. The Independent, The Observer and The Scotsman have all listed 'Night of Stone', a 500-page history of modern Russia, among the finest works published in 2000.

Dr Merridale is Senior Lecturer in European History at Bristol. She spent two years writing the book, which focuses on how Russians coped with death and destruction on a massive scale from the First World War onwards.

The book's enthusiastic reception has led to numerous national and international media appearances for the author.

Dr Merridale said: 'Researching and writing this book was a life-changing experience. I'll never forget many of the people I met in the former Soviet Union, and I hope I've been able to do justice to their story. 'The way the book has been received has taken me by surprise and I'm delighted that people seem to find it absorbing.'
