Bristol breeds new Brunels
Bristol - a city built on engineering innovation - is set to groom the leading engineers of tomorrow. A new, five-year Engineering Design degree is to be launched by Bristol University in response to the changing needs of industry and the economy. And it looks as though a sizeable proportion of the first intake of high-flying students will be female.
The pioneering degree programme has been devised in partnership with leading industrialists and the Royal Academy of Engineering. It aims to produce graduates with a well-rounded understanding of their subject, plus exceptional problem-solving, project-management and team-working skills.
Ove Arup, BAe Systems Airbus, Glaxo Wellcome, Rolls Royce, British Telecom and Motorola are among the companies that are working with the University and will be offering students year-long placements as part of the programme.
Dr Mike Barry of the University's Department of Engineering Mathematics said: "This will be a very demanding and innovative programme leading to a Master of Engineering degree. It will fit exceptionally bright people for the needs of tomorrow.
"The engineers who will be making the running in aerodynamics and propulsion, communication engineering and similar fields in 15 years' time are leaving school now. We will help them acquire the knowledge, skills and experience they will need to meet the challenge.
"The quality of the applicants for the first intake has been stunning. It's really pleasing that over a quarter of those offered places are female. We may be continuing a great Bristol tradition by promoting engineering excellence, but we're also breaking the mould and gearing up for a changed world."
Twenty-five students will take up places on the new programme in October and join the 1,000 other students in the University's internationally renowned Faculty of Engineering.
