Dr Robert Greally receives Fulbright Award to the US

Dr Robert Greally, Lecturer in Law at the University of Bristol Law School, has received a Fulbright Scholar Award to carry out research at the New York University School of Law (NYU Law) on one of the most well-regarded and impactful scholarship programmes in the world.

The US-UK Fulbright Commission works to advance knowledge, promote civic engagement and develop compassionate leaders through education exchange between the US and the UK. Dr Robert Greally was selected from a strong applicant pool to conduct research on why legislatures are distrusted and neglected within contemporary constitutional thought.

While at NYU School of Law, Robert will engage in a comparative and historical analysis of constitutional thought surrounding legislatures within two of the world’s most influential constitutional democracies: the US and the UK. Robert’s hopes are to rehabilitate legislatures within constitutional thought to help address the current global crisis of constitutional democracy.

Commenting on receiving the award, Robert said:

“It is a great honour to receive a Fulbright Scholar Award to attend the Hauser Global Law School Program at New York University School of Law. I am looking forward to exploring the US’s vibrant constitutional culture and helping Americans understand the UK’s complex and elusive constitution.

“As a Fulbright scholar, I hope my research can support constitutional actors and scholars in tackling the problems of declining political trust in our legislatures through transforming our understanding of why legislatures are so important for our constitutional democracies.”

Maria Balinska, Executive Director, US-UK Fulbright Commission said:

“Our vision is a world where there are no obstacles to learning, understanding and collaboration. There are many global challenges to overcome: we need compassionate leaders to tackle them.

“This cohort of talented Scholars – who have just been through one of the most competitive selection processes in the Commission’s recent history – will be placing cultural engagement at the heart of their experiences as they undertake ambitious teaching and research programmes in the UK: I am filled with hope for the wonderful collaborations that will ensue.”

Dr Robert Greally is the first member of the Law School to receive the Fulbright award since Professor Harry Mcvea in 1994-1995.
