A fantastic and unforgettable year: Q&A with LLM Graduate Matias Guarda

Matias Guarda, LLM International Commercial Law graduate

10 March 2023

Ahead of our Postgraduate Open Day on 22 March, we caught up with recent graduate and winner of the prize for Best Performance in the LLM International Commercial Law, Matias Guarda, as he shared his inspiration for coming to Bristol, what he loved about the city, and his plans for the future.

First of all, congratulations on winning this prize! What does it mean to you to receive it?

Thank you very much. Receiving this award from the University of Bristol is a great honor. I am truly humbled and happy to have been recognised for my hard work and dedication throughout the year I spent in Bristol. This award is the icing on the cake on a fantastic and unforgettable year.

What made you decide to apply to the International Commercial Law LLM degree at Bristol?

The LLM at Bristol stood out to me due to the university's reputation and the wide range of subjects available within the LLM pathway. The quality of the program and the opportunity to study in a vibrant city also played a role in my decision.

What was your favourite part of the course?

It has to be the rich and stimulating discussions that took place in the lectures, both with the professors and my fellow students.

What was your favourite part about living in Bristol?

I was particularly drawn to the city's outdoorsy nature, with its numerous parks and green spaces, that offered the best escape from the hustle and bustle from the city. I enjoyed taking walks in these areas with my girlfriend, which provided a peaceful retreat and a chance to connect with nature.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

I would advise them to enjoy the full experience, and not only focus on the academic aspects of the program. It is important to research the programme thoroughly and make sure it aligns with their career interests, but they should also strive to enjoy the full college experience, get involved in extra-curricular activities and enjoy the city.

What extra-curricular activities were you involved in?

I was involved in several extra-curricular activities. My favourite one was joining the university's tennis club, where I had the opportunity to play and improve my skills, as well as meeting new people and making friends. It was a great way to balance my academic life and continue enjoying my hobby.

What are your future plans now you have graduated?

As someone who is currently working at a law firm, my hope is to apply all I have learned in the LLM and continue to deepen and improve my practice. I believe that the knowledge and skills that I acquired through my coursework, as well as the experience gained through the lectures and discussions, will be invaluable as I continue to advance in my career.
