Law Research Seminar Series: Jurors and jury service in interwar Bristol

17 May 2023, 1.00 PM - 17 May 2023, 2.00 PM

2.13, Wills Memorial Building

On 17 May 2023 the Centre for Law and History Research welcomes Dr Kay Crosby to deliver a talk on Jurors and jury service in interwar Bristol.

Abstract

In this paper, Dr Crosby will be exploring what jury service looked like in Bristol during the period between the two world wars, and how this jurisdiction's overall weirdness was important in the shift towards the jury system that exists throughout England and Wales today. Bristol was close to jurisdictionally unique between 1825 and 1920, in the amount of freedom its officials had to choose whoever they wanted for their juries. It is also the only local jurisdiction I have found with a complete set of juror summoning books for the period. So for reasons both of principle and convenience, Bristol's local jury system ends up being of central importance in understanding the jury system of England and Wales more generally during this period.

All Law School staff and doctoral students are welcome.
