Judge Theodor Meron CMG is a former Judge of the Appeals Chamber of the United Nations’ International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda ICTR), as well as former President of the ICTY and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism).

He is an international authority in the fields of international humanitarian law, human rights and international criminal law. He has authored a dozen books on international law and more than a hundred articles. His most recent book is Standing Up for Justice: the Challenges of Trying Atrocity Crimes (OUP 2021).

Judge Theodor is a member of the Institut de Droit International and the Council on Foreign Relations, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the recipient of many awards and honours, including Officer of the French Legion of Honour, Grand Officer of the French National Order of Merit as well as Officer of the Order of Merit of Poland and Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (UK). He is also a past Honorary President of the American Society of International Law and past Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law, as well as Charles L. Denison Professor of Law Emeritus at NYU School of Law. He is currently a special adviser on international humanitarian law to the International Criminal Court, as well as an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, a Visiting Professor of Law in Oxford, and an Academic Associate in the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. Previously, he held visiting fellowships at All Souls and Mansfield Colleges, Oxford.
