The impact of technology on corporate functionalities: Investors

18 September 2023, 1.00 PM - 18 September 2023, 2.00 PM

Room 2.13, Wills Memorial Building

The Centre for Global Law and Innovation and the Centre for Private and Commercial Law are co-hosting a talk by Dr Akshaya Kalmanath, Associate Professor at Australia National University, discussing a chapter in her upcoming book 'Corporations, Technology and the Law'. This event is open to University of Bristol Law School staff and PGR students.

The chapter considers the rise of retail investors, especially during the pandemic. It will delve into the factors that might have encouraged many new investors to enter the market – the lockdowns due to covid-19, and reddit and other online forums where such investors could engage and act together.

The chapter will also review how companies’ engagement with investors has changed in recent times because of tech-enhancements.

Dr Kalmanath will also discuss changes in the way investors engage with corporations and what these changes mean for our understanding of the corporate form. Retail investors have actively advocated ESG issues, thus pushing the corporation to consider and act upon matters other than short-term profits.
