Update on 6 Oct: Jocelyn Cockburn, partner at Hodge, Jones & Allen, and Lorna Templeton from the Centre for Death & Society are going to join the panel discussion.

The Centre for Health, Law & Society at the University of Bristol Law School would like to welcome you to a launch of the newly published Death, Family and the Law: the contemporary inquest in context by Dr Ed Kirton-Darling.

Published by Bristol University Press (BUP), the book focuses on the place of the family in the inquest system and investigations by coroners. BUP say that ‘This accessibly written book draws together empirical, theoretical and historical perspectives to develop a rich, nuanced analysis of the contemporary inquest system in England and Wales. It investigates theories of kinship drawn from socio-legal research and analyses law, accountability and the legal process. Excerpts of conversations with coroners and officers offer real insights into how the role of family can be understood and who family is perceived to be, and how their participation fundamentally shapes the investigation into a death.’

The launch will be an opportunity to explore future lines of research, and will include contributions from Professor Sara Ryan (author of Justice for Laughing Boy) and Professor Rosie Harding(Birmingham Law School).  Jocelyn Cockburn, partner at Hodge, Jones & Allen, and Lorna Templeton from the Centre for Death & Society at University of Bath are also going to take part in a panel discussion.

Refreshments will be provided. This will be a hybrid event.
