3 March 2022, 6.30 PM - 3 March 2022, 7.30 PM

Queen's Building, University Walk, Bristol, BS8 1TR

20 years after Guantánamo Bay opened, we talk to Mohamedou Ould Slahi who was tortured and detained there without charge for over 14 years.

About this event

The University of Bristol's Human Rights Implementation Centre is honoured to be hosting Mohamedou Ould Slahi on the first leg of his UK speaking tour to promote the role of forgiveness in ending injustice.

Mohamedou will be joined in conversation by Nancy Hollander and Professor Sir Malcolm Evans. Nancy Hollander is an internationally recognised criminal defense lawyer who represented Mohamedou at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base, winning his freedom in 2016, after 11 years of pro bono representation.

Professor Sir Malcolm Evans, is the co-Director of the Human Rights Implementation Centre and the former Chair of the UN’s Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture.

Mohamedou's book, Guantánamo Diary, was the first and only memoir by a still-imprisoned Guantánamo detainee (published in January 2015). In 2021 it was adapted into the film 'The Mauritanian'.

The event is open to special guests and staff, students and alumni of University of Bristol.
