Juliet Cheetham

When appointed to the Lane Committee, Juliet Cheetham was a Lecturer in Applied Social Studies at Oxford University. Before that she was a probation officer. While the Committee was sitting she had her second child - an event that seemed to provoke some people who were very against abortion. The work of the Committee prompted an interest in medical education which Juliet was able to pursue as a Fellow of Green College in Oxford. The Committee also showed her how public policy can be influenced by sound research and, in 1986, she left Oxford to direct an ESRC research centre at Stirling University. Its task was to explore the effectiveness of social work. Juliet then returned to practice as the Social Work Commissioner for the Scottish Mental Welfare Commission. Subsequently, she joined the Care Inspectorate. She now sits on Mental Health Tribunals.
