Bristol Benjamin Meaker Distinguished Visiting Professor Signe E. Kastberg is a mathematics teacher educator at Purdue University in the USA and has been the Mary Endres Endowed Chair of Elementary Education since 2022. Professor Kastberg is collaborating with Dr Tracy Helliwell in the School of Education on Mathematics teacher educator design and implementation of instructional activities and practices for preservice teachers learning from experience.

Synopsis for seminar:

Relationships have been identified as foundational in professional education including mathematics teacher education. Yet what is meant by relationship is often left to the practitioner to imagine and define. Exploring views of relational practice in the context of work with prospective teachers builds insight into the role of relationships for teaching about teaching. Definitions for relational teacher education and characteristics of this construct will be illustrated using examples from Dr. Kastberg’s practice and research. Relational teacher education is presented as lens for teacher educators seeking to improve practice.

Audience: School of Education (Research Centre for Teaching, Learning and Curriculum (TLC))
