Dan Kilper is Professor of Future Communication Networks in the College of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin and is the Director of the SFI CONNECT Centre, Ireland’s research centre for future communications and networks. He holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the Columbia University Data Science Institute and the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. He started his career at Bell Labs as a Member of Technical Staff where her served on the Bell Labs Advisory Council on Research and was part of the team that received the Bell Labs President’s Gold Medal award for R&D that led to the first transcontinental transparent fiber optic network. He is the founder of Palo Verde Networks, Inc., which is developing innovative technologies that enable fiber optic networks to be more intelligent and agile to meet the growing demands on our communication networks.

He is an internationally recognized R&D leader on energy efficient and sustainable information and communication technologies. He is the Green Internet and Service Provisioning topical area editor for the IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking journal, serves on the steering committee of the IEEE Sustainable ICT Initiative and co-chairs the Optics Working Group of the IEEE International Network Generations Roadmap. He was the founding Technical Committee Chair of the GreenTouch Initiative and served in leadership roles in the Center for Energy Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) at the University of Melbourne and the Center for Integrated Access Networks (CIAN) at the University of Arizona. In 2019, he was recognized with a NIST Communication Technology Lab Innovator Award. He holds thirteen patents and authored six book chapters and more than one hundred sixty peer-reviewed publications. His research is aimed at solving fundamental and real-world problems in communication networks, addressing interdisciplinary challenges for smart cities, sustainability, and digital equity.
