CoSEM CDT student receives prize from GKN Aerospace

Jacopo Lavazza receiving his prize at GKN Aerospace, Filton

3 January 2024

PhD student Jacopo Lavazza has been awarded the GKN Aerospace prize for the ‘Best Taught Mark in the CoSEM CDT Taught Component'.

Jacopo achieved the highest average mark in the 2022 entry CDT cohort for their taught units and will receive £150 for the prize.

All PhD students in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Composites Science, Engineering and Manufacturing (CoSEM CDT) undertake an innovative taught component in their first year. They are introduced to a wide range of multidisciplinary topics, giving them a strong foundation of knowledge and technical skills to embark on their PhD research projects.

For decades, GKN Aerospace technologies have inspired and industrialised the aerospace industry, combining engineering excellence and technology leadership. All major aircraft and engine manufacturers rely on their advanced technologies. Their aerostructures, engine systems and special products improve the performance of more than 100,000 flights every day.

Jacopo said “I’m grateful and honoured to receive the GKN prize for the best mark in the taught component of the CDT. The first year gave me the knowledge and tools to continue my experience. Moving into the PhD, this precious set of transversal skills can be easily adapted to my research, focusing on bio-based polyurethane foams and many more materials science and engineering fields. As an international student who left family and friends in their country, I am particularly grateful for the fantastic people I have met until now, from the CDT22 cohort to the CDT directors and other PhD students and academics. Without them, all of this would not be possible.”

Sameer Savani, Vice President, GTC UK said “GKN Aerospace via the Bristol Global Technology Centre are very proud to sponsor the award, recognising Jacopo’s achievements and wishing him every success in his future career. The GKN Aerospace Team have a great capability in composites manufacture and other supporting technologies so to host the next generation of composites engineers has been a pleasure and we hope to see them in GKN Aerospace or the wider composites sector in the years to come.”
