Riccardo Manno, a final year PhD student from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Composites for Innovation and Science (ACCIS CDT), has been awarded a £40,000 Impact Acceleration Account grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The 7-month project, which will start on 1 September 2021, is titled 'MicroTool – Micro-modelling tool for Ceramic Matrix Composites'. The project will aim to provide Rolls-Royce with a micro-modelling software, which will aid the design of Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs).

Riccardo said: "I was really surprised when I learned that I had won this Impact Acceleration grant, mainly because I presented it as the Principal Investigator while I am about to complete my PhD. Although it is a small grant, it made me feel proud of the work we have developed during the last four years at the Bristol Composite Institute.

I am happy to have the support from Dr Giuliano AllegriDr Adam Thompson, and Rolls-Royce, who have helped me throughout and believed in this project."
