Our history

University of Bristol opens its doors, becoming the first higher education institution in the country to admit men and women as equals.

  • 1880s
    Groundbreaking economists Mary Paley and Alfred Marshall join the University. Mary was one of the first female lecturers in Britain.
  • 1960s
    The University of Bristol pioneers the application of mathematics to economics, requiring an A-level in Mathematics for entry to its Economics degree.
  • 1976
    Future Nobel Laureate and Frisch medal winner Sir Angus Deaton becomes Professor of Econometrics.
  • 1990
    William Lewis, CEO of Dow Jones and publisher of The Wall Street Journal, graduates from Bristol.
  • 2003
    Bristol’s business incubator partnership SETsquared is established, later to be named best of its kind in the world by UBI Global.
  • 2015
    The Bloomberg Room our financial trading computer room is opened, allowing students to develop their knowledge of financial trading software.
